At least 103 people have been injured following the derailment of a Long Island Rail Road train at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal on Wednesday, January 4, 2017. According to reports, the train derailed when it struck and went over an emergency bumper in the terminal, causing the wheels of the first car and one other axle to lift off the tracks and tip the cabin to the side.
Several passengers have complained of neck and back injuries after the accident, with many being carried away on stretchers. As it stands, no fatalities have been reported in connection with the incident. Roughly 600 people were onboard the train at the time of the accident.
An investigation is currently underway into the exact cause of the accident and why the operator did not stop the train in advance of the bumper. One passenger told WABC News she believed the train was traveling at a faster speed than normal immediately prior to the crash.
