According to reports from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Roughly 600 veterans who received dental care at the Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wisconsin may have been exposed to infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.
From October 2015 to October 2016, a dentist at the facility exposed patients to potentially deadly infections by using and reusing his own dental equipment and “cleaning” it rather than using sterile and disposable equipment provided by the VA. According to Acting Medical Center Director Victoria Brahm, the involved dentist’s actions were purposefully in violation of VA regulations, as he had properly used the appropriate equipment during required training and orientations. His actions were ultimately discovered and reported by someone filling in for the dentist’s assistant.
Shockingly, the involved dentist has not been fired but instead reassigned to an administrative position. The VA is currently in the process of identifying and notifying all who may have been infected by the doctor’s carelessness and is offering free testing and treatment to anyone infected.
