Johnson & Johnson Hit With $70m Verdict For Cancer-causing Talc Powders

A Missouri jury slammed Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and its talc supplier with yet another substantial verdict in a lawsuit filed by a woman who developed ovarian cancer after using the company’s talc-base baby powder on her genitals. The verdict, worth a whopping $70 million, comes as the third massive verdict in the state’s talc litigation and is among the highest awarded in cases against J&J.

Talc, the main ingredient in many baby powders and talcum powders sold for decades by J&J and other manufacturers, has been a known link to ovarian cancer in women when used on the genitals and various other adverse health effects by members of the medical community for years. Despite its known dangers, sellers of talc-based products have fought
to keep warning labels off their products and continue to market them as effective feminine hygiene products.

According to court documents, J&J had reportedly been urged since at least 1982 to warn consumers of possible health risks. Surprisingly, J&J continues to assert that there is no solid link between talc and ovarian cancer.

Litigation related to J&J’s talc-based products is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, with more than 1,200 cases still pending. Earlier in February, a Missouri Jury awarded a $72 million to the family of a woman who died after developing ovarian cancer from using the company’s baby powders for decades. Later in May, the company was hit with another $55 million verdict.
