Zofran (ondansetron) is
an
anti-nausea drug
commonly prescribed “off-label” to pregnant women with morning
sickness.
Unfortunately, the safety of Zofran for a fetus is not well-studied and
has been linked to an increased risk of a range of
devastating birth defects
when taken in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Some of the birth defects that have been linked to Zofran include:
-
Heart defects such as heart murmurs, abnormal heart rhythms, and atrial septal defect
-
Kidney defects such as ectopia, malrotation, horshoe kidney, kidney agenesis, polycystic
kidney disease, medullary sponge kidney, and cystinosis
-
Musculoskeletal defects such as clubfoot, cleft palate, omphalocele, gastroschisis, and webbed toes
