Brain Injuries

Brain injuries can be catastrophic and may result from auto accidents, rollovers, and construction accidents. Morelli Ratner, P.C. has helped individuals and families recover compensation for all major types of brain injuries. When a brain injury occurs, neurons, nerve tracts or sections of the brain are often affected. A traumatic brain injury happens when an outside force impacts the head hard enough to cause the soft tissue of the brain to move inside the hard bone tissue of the skull or if the force causes the skull to break and directly hurts the brain.

Closed head injuries include concussion, contusion, subdural haematoma, and extradural haematoma. It was once believed that open-head injuries were more serious than closed-head injuries, but often the pressure caused by blood buildup in a closed-head injury can cause traumatic damage. If the neurons and nerve tracts are damaged, messages telling the brain what to do can be impaired. This can change the way a person thinks, acts, feels, and moves the body. Brain injury can also change the complex internal functions of the body, such as regulating body temperature, blood pressure, bowel and bladder control. These changes can be temporary or permanent and may cause impairment or a complete inability to perform physical functions.

An open head brain injury occurs when the skull is penetrated and the brain is injured, making it susceptible to infection. Open head brain injuries typically cause impairment to the functions that the injured part of the brain controls. An anoxic brain injury is when a brain does not receive adequate oxygen, usually resulting from a serious accident where heavy bleeding occurs. The consequences that follow an anoxic brain injury depend upon the area of the brain or spinal cord that lacked oxygen and the length of time that the oxygen was cut off.

As the result of head trauma, brain tissue becomes bruised and swollen, and broken blood vessels may cause blood to mix with the brain tissue. Brain contusions may cause other serious medical conditions, including some that can place the victim in a vegetative state or death.
