Fungal Eye Infections Linked to ReNu with MoistureLoc

On May 15, 2006, Bausch & Lomb recalled ReNu with MoistureLoc due to reports of fusarium keratitis fungal infections associated with use of the contact solution. In April, Bausch & Lomb halted shipments of the product and the federal CDC and FDA investigated reports of the fungal infections. Bausch & Lomb has recently concluded that the chemical formula of ReNu with MoistureLoc may increase the risk of fungal eye infections in certain situations. The company and the FDA acknowledge that if the fusarium fungus enters the eye, the MoistureLoc solution allows a polymer film to form around the fusarium fungus. This film prevents the disinfectant in the product from killing the fungus, and the fungal infection begins its course.

Fusarium Keratitis Eye Infections

In April, the CDC publicized reports of fusarium keratitis in contact lens wearers. Approximately 176 cases of fusarium keratitis in 27 states have been reported. The CDC and FDA conducted full investigations of 30 cases and found that 28 involved contact lens wearers, 26 of whom used Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu product or a generic version. Fusarium keratitis infections are usually extremely rare and are typically caused by fusarium, a fungus found in plants, water and soil. Symptoms of fusarium keratitis fungal infection include redness, blurry vision, eye discharge, swelling, tearing, pain and increased light sensitivity. Treatment of fusarium keratitis is very long and painful and includes antifungal medications and surgery. In some patients, corneal transplants are required when the infection has caused significant damage within the eyes. Victims are often left with limited to no vision in the infected eye(s).
