Avandia Study Results
GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Avandia, has provided the FDA with a meta analysis of 42 randomized, controlled clinical trials in which Avandia was compared to either placebo or other anti-diabetic therapies in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results indicate that patients who take Avandia short term have a 30-40 percent greater risk of heart attack and other heart-related adverse events than patients treated with placebo or other anti-diabetic therapy. An article published in the New England Journal of Medicine about the Cleveland Clinic analysis puts the overall increase in heart attack risk at 43%. GlaxoSmithKline continues to affirm Avandia’s safety. Avandia came on the market in 1999 and has been used by more than 6 million diabetes patients since its approval. It works by increasing a patient’s sensitivity to insulin. The FDA issued a safety alert to endocrinologists and consumers to alert them that the risk of ischemic cardiovascular events due to Avandia remain unclear. The May 2007 Avandia alert was based on an analysis of safety data for the treatment of Type II diabetes mellitus. The analysis is ongoing. Controlled clinical trials have indicated a possible increase in risk of heart attack and related death associated with Avandia. However, the RECORD and DREAM trials may indicate differing results. In 2006, the FDA updated Avandia’s label to warn about a potential increase in heart attacks and heart-related chest pain in some individuals using Avandia.
