Levaquin, a brand name for the drug Levofloxacin, is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson’s Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Fluoroquinolones are effective against a broad range of bacteria. Levaquin has been prescribed for pneumonia and urinary tract infections, until a specific drug can be substituted in Levaquin’s place. Levaquin is the only repiratory fluoroquinolone approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating nosocomial pneumonia. This type of pneumonia is acquired in the hospital.

Levaquin Side Effects

From November 1997 to December 2007, the FDA received around 400 complaints of tendon injuries following the use of Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones. Tendon injuries associated with fluoroquinolones may have been misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis for years.

A black box warning was applied to Levaquin in 2008 by the FDA because of risks of tendonitis and tendon rupture associated with the drug.

Symptoms related to the use of Levaquin include:

  • Inflammation
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Tears or bruises in the tendons in the hand, shoulder, legs, and Achilles

Those most likely to suffer fluoroquinolone-associated tendon injuries are individuals over the age of 60 who are taking corticosteroid drugs, or who are kidney, heart, or lung transplant recipients. These can be debilitating and extremely painful injuries. The victims of these tendon injuries often must undergo surgery to repair the rupture or tear, and then go through months of physical therapy. Many of them will never fully recover after this type of injury.

Levaquin Mass Tort Multidistrict Litigation

At this time, mass tort multidistrict litigation has been drawn up against the producers of Levaquin, and victims of tendon damage and neuropathy linked to the use of Levaquin are pursuing justice and compensation for their injuries.
