Erb's palsy

New York, New Jersey and Nationwide

While difficult births are not uncommon, modern hospitals and obstetrics practices are equipped with the right equipment to make a safe Cesarean section (C-section) birth possible. Many complicated births can be predicted during ultrasound readings and danger to both mother and baby minimized through taking appropriate precautions.

Causes of Erb’s Palsy

With all the medical advances in the US, infants still experience injuries during childbirth. One of these birth injuries is Erb’s palsy, or brachial palsy. Erb’s palsy is a condition where the brachial plexus, or shoulder nerves and tendons, are damaged. The most common cause of Erb’s is “difficult childbirth.” The actual cause of Erb’s palsy during childbirth may include:

  • Pulling on the head or shoulder of the infant
  • Improper use of forceps during labor
  • Inappropriate use of vacuum suctioning to assist with labor
  • Mishandling of infant after birth

Erb’s Palsy Treatment Expensive

Infants who develop Erb’s palsy during birth sometimes recover on their own but for many, the condition must be treated through physical therapy, and others never recover from the condition. The cost for the treatment of Erb’s palsy can be steep, and there is no guarantee that a child will be able to completely recover.

Sometimes nerve transplants are necessary to help an infant recover from Erb’s palsy, and this expensive procedure may not be successful. Other treatments have the potential for weakening or damaging muscle tissues and may be as potentially dangerous to the child’s motor skills as the condition itself is.
