Avandia (rosiglitazone), one of a class of drugs known as thiazolidinediones, is prescribed by doctors to manage type 2 diabetes in their patients. It has also come under scrutiny for several dangerous side effects.
GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Avandia, was charged in a U.S. Senate report in February of 2010 with withholding data from the Food and Drug Administration. This report detailed GSK’s knowledge and downplaying of the link between Avandia and fatal heart attacks. The report states that between 1999 and 2007, there were 80,000 fatal heart attacks that can be directly attributed to the use of Avandia. This is just the latest in a long line of risks associated with Avandia.
Side Effects of Avandia
Some of the most dangerous potential side effects of Avandia include:
- Heart attack
- Congestive heart failure
- Liver toxicity
- Allergic reaction
Some of the symptoms associated with these side effects include headaches, low red blood cell count, and cold or flu-like symptoms. Additional side effects in women may include hand, foot and upper arm fractures.
Patients who are prescribed Avandia receive the drug to control type 2 diabetes which does not require insulin to be managed. Avandia is sometimes combined with other medications or prescribed for other uses, but is not intended for use in patients with type 1 diabetes.
Avandia is now required to carry a black box warning on its packaging to indicate that patients using Avandia may experience life threatening side effects. A black box warning is the step just below having the defective drug recalled from the market. But this may be too little too late as many users of Avandia have already suffered heart attacks and stroke brought on by the drug.
